Dear Loved Ones,
We believe with all our hearts that we’ve been called to adopt, as you surely know. What you may not know, however, are the three main reasons that support this desire: the need for adoptions, God’s call for us to care for orphans, and the desire on our hearts.
The need: HIV/AIDS has had a devastating effect on people all around the world - and no place has it been more damaging than in Africa (especially sub-Saharan countries such as Ethiopia, where thousands of people die every day from the disease). One consequence of these tragic deaths is that they contribute to the reality that there are 1.4 million children in Ethiopia who have been orphaned.
Worldwide, there are over 160 million orphans. This is a major problem everywhere, and we acknowledge the discrepancy, and want to do something about it.
God’s Call: We are adopted by God. And as He has saved us, He directs us to care for the fatherless and the widows (James 1:27, Psalms 68:5-6, Isaiah 1:17, Matthew 18:5). This doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone needs to adopt directly (although that would be awesome), because there are other ways to care for the fatherless and widows (partnering with great organizations [like COTN], starting non-profits to provide immediate needs, helping those who who do adopt, or simply by conversing with others in the hopes of opening their eyes to how many orphaned children there are in the world).
Yet, through reading other adoption blogs, we found that if 7% of Christians adopted a child there wouldn’t be any orphaned children. We want to be a part of that 7%.
Our Desire: It has long been on our hearts to adopt, and we are confident that this longing has been placed there by God. This, along with the other two reasons, lead us forward - toward something we know we need to do...
We are adopting a boy that we do not know yet. We do not know his age (it should be somewhere between newborn and 4-years old). We do not know his name (it may be hard to pronounce). We don’t know what he has been through (though it is has probably been difficult). But what we do know is this:
He has likely never known the warm and loving kiss good night of a mother, the joy of a playing with a father, what it feels like to be hugged by grandparents or feel warm and safe in a caring home. He likely has yet to receive full medical attention, proper nutritious food, a childhood that allows him to be a child and an environment where he can thrive and flourish to reach his full potential. And the thing that he will likely need the most is a loving family.
We will give him that...and you can help.
We would like to invite you to be a part of our adoption. We have two goals; the first is to create a community of friends, family and neighbors - locally and globally - who are ready and excited to welcome our child into their lives as our son. Our second is to raise $10K to bring him home.
It is clear that this community will be there to love and support our family, leveraging their time for his, and our, benefit. But, the financial goal persists. And just as the Great Wall of China was constructed one stone at a time, we are relying on God for $1 at a time. We would be remiss if we didn’t ask for help from families and friends who will be in our lives and who may be willing to donate to get us one step closer to the adoption – no amount is too small!
We cannot wait to bring him home (we are beyond excited about this), to hold him in our arms, and guide him as he grows. No words can capture the true joy and excitement we feel as we anticipate the blessing of his presence in our home.
Please pray with faith that God would help us. And contact us if you have any questions or would like to chat. We would love to hear from each and every one of you! Thank you for taking the time to let us share our journey with you. We’re excited for the ways in which that will continue.
