Pediatric Nurse Details

Hi! My name is Kendall, I am a 24 year old pediatric nurse with a passion for:

people (especially kids!)

travel

Working with impoverished people.

Healthcare and teaching healthcare, being a nurse is my favorite thing in the world!

And yes, working with the best, most fun group of people ever!

I have decided to follow this crazy dream I have had since high school,

(This is written in a journal that my high school guidance counselor gave to me)

Photo: Crazy that the dream of going to Africa all began in high school. This is written in a journal my high school counselor gave to me.

I AM GOING TO AFRICA!

The dream has always been in the back of my mind, but the doubt and fear alway took over.

January 2012 I went to a Honduras Reunion dinner.

The man whom runs the orphange my college partners with was there and spoke.

He was orignally from Florida, he and his wife went to help after a hurricane and just decided they needed to do more.

They packed right up and moved to Honduras.

His words were,"There comes a time where you no longer think, you just do."

That was the moment I knew it was time to stop thinking and make something happen.

I looked at many organizations.

The search was tiring, discouraging, and seemed endless.

I finally stumbled across Ripple Africa.

After speaking with the volunteer coordinator I knew this was the one for me.

Ripple focuses on helping the communites of Nkhata Bay District of Malawi in several ways;

Healthcare

Mwaya-Dispensary-Malawi-Africa-1

Environment

Education

RIPPLE Africa provides locally made toys

They have a large focus on helping the community to learn to be self-sufficent.

Their motto is,"providing a hand up, not a hand out."

So, I am leaving in June of this year and the plan is to serve for two years.

I will be working in healthcare doing things such as;

working in clinics, especially the five and under clinic,

healthcare education,

making home visits to community members that need on-going treatment,

and because of my love for kids, they are also letting me be a part-time preschool teacher!

So what does it all cost?

A one way plane ticket is about $1,200.

Volunteer fees for two years is $9,000

(This covers housing, and up keep fees of the organization.)

Living expenses such as food, firewood, travel, internet are $90 per week which adds up to $9,360 for two years.

There are other miscellaneous costs as well, such as immunizations and insurance.

So it is all adding up!

I was very fortunate to recieve a grant I applied for through the interexchange foundation.

They graciously awarded me the highest amount of $10,000.

I am so excited, shocked, and humbled that I was choosen to recieve this grant.

This leaves me to rasing a little more than $10,000.

I am very fortunate to have a job where I can pick up extra shifts and have been doing that as much as possible.

I am also going to be selling my car, deffering my student loans, and will have no other bills in the U.S. to pay.

Even with all of this I am going to need the support of others to help me make this possible.

I am not asking for a certain donation amount, any bit will be helpful!

Please do pass this on to your friends and families and get the word out that I am going.

I want to raise awareness of the need in Africa and hopefully insipire others to follow their dreams, whatever they may be.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am already overwhelmed by all of the love and well wishes I have recieved when people are learning about this trip.
